SOURCE ROCKS IN THE BARENTS SEA

Home / PREVIOUS SEMINARS / SOURCE ROCKS IN THE BARENTS SEA

Recent research including both the Barents Sea and Svalbard, summarized in an article by professor Snorre Olaussen, UNIS, in GEO (“May the source be with you”), clearly illustrates that the Barents Sea, different from the North Sea and the Norwegian Sea, has multiple, good quality source rocks. Recent well results also make this subject extremely potent as they provoke more questions than answers.

Jurassic source rocks are found on Svalbard (Agardhfjellet Formation), while time equivalent black shales are proven to be source rocks in the Barents Sea (Hekkingen Formation).
