ABOUT THE SEMINAR

Although the existence of injectites has been known since early in the 19th century, the importance of these deposits as oil reservoirs was not realized before the 1990’s.

It all started with the making of a Plan for Development and Operations (PDO) for the Balder field. The operator – ExxonMobil – soon understood that sandbodies above the main reservoir were of a different nature than the deep marine sandstones that were sourced from the East Shetland Platform. Later, similar sand bodies were also recognized in the oil fields Jotun and Grane, as well as in several fields in the UK sector.

In the early 2000’s the American company Marathon made significant progress in the understanding of injectites when taking a closer look at what was thought to be deep marine sands in a discovery to the northwest of Balder. Today it is fully proved that the reservoir in the Volund field is genuine injectites with superb reservoir characteristics. The same is true for the two satellite fields Viper and Kobra.

The purpose of the half-day seminar in the series Hydrocarbon Habitats February 16 is to shed light on a play model within the Tertiary, and possibly also older formations that may have an interesting upside potential on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.

We cover several subjects in the seminar, such as analogues, reservoir characteristics, geometry, seismic identification and possible extension of the play into other areas of the NCS than the Balder/Volund areas.

Andrew Hurst, professor at the University of Aberdeen and renowned expert on injectites, will give the key-note talk. Hurst has done extensive research on injectites and has been a long time consultant for the oil industry.
